Tourism is playing an increasingly important role in many older communities and providing distinctive and attractive public sign systems is a vital component in any program. We combine our experience in urban design, community planning, architecture, and graphic design to assist cities and towns in this process.

What is Wayfinding?

Cities and towns are complex environments; they are often confusing to a first time visitor. Yet, views from the road often form our first and most lasting view of a community. A wayfinding system welcomes, orients and guides visitors in and around a community. Successful programs do more than simply create informational and directional signs; they intuitively reach out to put visitors at ease. What wayfinding can do:

    Welcome
  Provide sense of place
  Communicate quickly and effectively
  Be attractive and durable
  Increase visitor retention
  Provide safe, consistent experience

Regional Wayfinding

As a region heavily invested in tourism, Virginia's Historic Triangle recognized the opportunity to dramatically improve the visitor experience by better welcoming, guiding, and cross-selling regional attractions. Each year, approximately four million visitors travel by car to and within the Greater Williamsburg area. However, poorly marked routes, sign clutter, and a lack of a cohesive sign strategy under serve this important visitor market. Frazier Associates was hired by a group representing multiple jurisdictions to improve signage on a regional level; this inter-municipal focus on a coordinated signage strategy is unprecedented in the State of Virginia.
